3 Simple Ways to Turn Business Instability into Opportunity
In a world that continues to disrupt the business landscape, how can business turn challenge into opportunity so that business life feels more stable and yet still innovative?
I delivered an opening speech this morning to some business leaders to talk to them about exactly this. In a world still going mad, how can businesses identify & prioritise the biggest challenges they face to turn them into a positive. How are businesses adapting and surviving and what are some simple steps that might help?
If we take the vast majority of businesses in the UK, they are micro and small in size and are also among the most agile. Although they are able to spot a challenge, understand it and adapt quickly, capacity to do so can feel thin on the ground.

Here are 3 simple ways to start thinking about how some of these key challenges can become added value in your business. I want you to imagine your business is the cork on the world sea. It's choppy out there and it's crowded:
Direction - data shows again and again that those businesses who are able to find long lasting success often have a great sense of direction. Even in difficult waters that are threatening to overwhelm, businesses that not only know where they want to get to with a clear vision, but also regularly re evaluate that vision are much more likely to avoid floating around in the worst of the seas and find a way through any chaos. The direction needs to be understood by all and becomes the beacon of hope/light that provides focus, clarity and simplicity.
Navigation - clearly it's essential that your cork has the best navigation system around. In this little anecdote, that would be systems and data. In fact systemic and consistent data gathering alongside regular, simple analysis. Weather reports, ender currents, storms on the horizon all need to be regularly evaluated for threat and opportunity. Flying blind is simply no longer an option for a business of any size and thankfully, data is something we're not short of.
Teamwork - although it's understandable why we spend so much time talking about AI and the digital revolution we're all withstanding (just), it's actually the humans in your business that will be the difference. If you have an inhouse team, this is about strong cultures, shared values and transformational leadership that keeps that team happy, positive, motivated and with a crystal clear understanding of the direction of travel. For those of you who use outside contractors or have networks and not employees, the same applies. Knowing who you can turn to, which human to trust, where to get valuable information when AI slop doesn't cut it. Mentors, friends, experts and more will be the key to providing the energy and resilience you need.
