5 Very Good Reasons Why Coaching & Community can Unlock what Business & the World Needs.
I've been business coaching for several decades and as an exec coach, you would expect me to say that I think coaching really works as a mechanism to develop thinking and unlock potential.
But this blog isn't really a list about why coaching & community is good for business, I think we know this I hope, but rather the deep human underbelly of why it works so well. And particularly, why it's perhaps more essential than ever in a world that is changing so rapidly, from digital transformation to existential threat.
What I have witnessed & experienced over the 1000s of hours of coaching and community facilitation 've been involved in, is something far deeper than the solutions that have come about, or the frameworks that have been tried. I have seen and felt fundamental shifts that have been profound & long lasting. In a world that needs steady, deep thinking leadership which involves group discussion & working, it's vital to begin to understand what really happens when coaching & community goes well.
You will notice that I am bringing together coaching & community here, because I feel there can be a synergistic amplification of both, when you bring them together. Community might mean a network, a team, a family, a coaching group or peer learning collective or many more options, but the process of facilitating collective thinking is transformative.

Before I go on, I want to be very very clear, that this isn't about me but rather those who seek out and benefit from coaching and community building. It is them that lead the way, open up their thinking, become vulnerable, make change & have courage. The transformation comes from the inside out.
So let's dive into the 5 very good reasons why turning to coaching & community holds so much potential for a future where people & business can thrive.
Human business - I remember when I was climbing the corporate ladder in the 90's & early 2000s the degree of separation between human and business was profound. I couldn't articulate it at the time, but it was clear, & I fear still is in many spheres, that the complication of 'human' in a business was avoided at all costs. Since the likes of Sir John Whitmore, wrote his seminal work about coaching and leadership, or Brene Brown has exposed the data around embracing humans fully into life and business, and of course many others, in 2026, we are perhaps emerging into a new era of connecting humans with business (or organisations etc etc). In a post pandemic world of severe burnout, dodgy leadership, the existential challenges of climate change, social change and digital change, we have little choice but to do something different. The old separation repeatedly exposed as defunct. Coaching and building communities offers a safe and structured way to bring 'what is human', complex, nuanced & changing into more rigid frameworks like a business, organisations or settings. This enriching process allows businesses to embrace, even leverage the powerful human dynamic alongside any outputs or requirements for the business itself. No longer cogs in the works, humans are given tools and confidence to self reflect & 'use' their unique skills for the benefit of all.
Relationship - good coaching & community doesn't necessarily need to founded in multiple qualifications or years of experience, although that can really make a difference, but rather be founded in relationship building. We might call this rapport building, but change and transformation in thinking and action, comes from the relationships built. Why? Because in a safe relationship there's unconditional regard, an acceptance about where everyone is in this moment. There is a 'meeting a client where they are'. There's no judgement about progress or levels of understanding. There is space held for those being coached or in a community to evolve their thinking at their own pace (more on that later) and of course, it is in the conversation that brains have the chance to grow a thought or get creative. This relationship first approach, visible in all good coaching & facilitation, is the foundation stone for stronger teams, safer spaces, more open conversations & therefore more innovative thinking and brave decisions.
Self discovery - let's be clear that coaching isn't therapy! But it can feel very deep sometimes. Unfortunately, 'deep' has got a some dodgy PR in many places. Sometimes thought of as indulgent, self regarding or even 'woowoo'. However, without self insight, self reflection, self discovery, there is little hope of any real change, transformation or innovation. None of us arrived here perfect and most of us have become less perfect over time as life experiences bruise and damage us. If all thoses bruises are unacknowledged and brought into leadership, and I'm sure I don't need to share examples with you, then it significantly reduces the chances of any business or team being successful, at least without serious cost. Coaching and community conversation is the ideal, safe space within which anyone can explore what they bring to the 'party'. Strengths of course, which can be leveraged effectively, but also blind spots, vulnerabilities, fears & anxieties. Shining a light on those universal human traits at an individual level gives any business or organisation the best chance of positive change.
Non prescriptive - who hasn't experienced in the last 24 hrs, someone, somewhere giving you the 3 things you must to do to achieve/change x,y or z? Social media, LinkedIn, the internet is littered with simple 3 step frameworks or techniques that are 'guaranteed' to be the difference you need. Now we have AI nattering to us like a friend while harvesting any old piece of content, everything we need to uncover, change or discover has become a checklist. I'm not anti anything here by the way, but I am cautious about quick fixes, prescriptive solutions or 5 perfect steps to change. See point 1 and be reminded that undertaking those magical steps as prescibed by Mr Chat or Claude, is a hugely complex human with decades of experiences and baggage. Coaching & community allows an 'unfolding' of thinking, a self led journey towards behaviours, decisions or changes that are inevitably more bespoke, but also meaningful and long lasting. We can be informed by research & the wisdom of others experience, but our next steps have to be created from the inside out to be truly change making.
Collective energy - whether in a 121 coaching relationship or in a community of humans, there's something truly powerful about bringing the brains and energy or two or people together. Two minds, in this context, are most certainly better than one. The world around us is a perpetual energy drain in many ways that can stifle creativity and dampen momentum. The onslaught of news, information or instant answers serves to pour water on the fire that businesses and organisations need to embrace innovation, new thinking and better ways of doing things. Coaching and community provide a ring fenced space within which a latent energy can be allowed to fizz, safe from distraction and busyness. It is within these spaces that there may be the best hope of finding the solutions that a business, a community, or indeed the world needs.
